February 9-13

On Saturday we had to opportunity to climb Moyo hill, which is the hill next to our camp.  The hike was surprisingly easy but we got a lot of sun! There was a great view from the top, including Lake Manyara in the distance. We even saw aardvark burrows at the top!

Sunday we got to shop around Karatu for some native treasures. The second we stepped out of the vehicles we were bombarded by street vendors who would follow us for miles trying to convince us to buy their jewelry.  Afterwards we got to go to Happy Days, the local bar, to try some Tanzanian beers, which was nice after a stressful day being hassled in Karatu.

On Monday and Tuesday we began our fieldwork in Manyara Lake National Park! We started off with some behavioral observations for our first scientific papers.

We had the pleasure of seeing elephants, wildebeest, zebras, warthogs, impalas, hippos, bushbucks, blue monkeys, olive baboons, dikdiks, cape buffalo, and an array of birds. (please see the wildlife sightings list of this blog for the complete list of wildlife we saw)

Today we are going back to Lake Manyara to do some animals tracking and a dung analysis!
