Just to get everyone up to speed (sorry, there has been
extremely limited internet here lately) last week we had the opportunity to go visit an
elusive African tribe, the Hadzabe. They are also known as Bushmen, who still
rely solely on hunting and gathering to fulfill their food requirements. It was
incredible to see the way in which they live, from meal to meal, sometimes
consisting of baboon or even a cape buffalo if they are lucky. They taught us
how to make fire and shoot bows and arrows.
We also did some community service; tree planting around Moyo
Hill, where we are living. It was nice to get out of camp and do some work for
the community where we have been living for nearly two months now!
Yesterday we had the privilege of visiting one of the wildlife
wonders of the world, Ngorongoro Crater, where numerous species of wildlife,
along with humans and livestock, live together in complete harmony. We
witnessed species like hyena and zebra sharing a mud hole; warthogs, cattle,
and wildebeest all grazing on a single acre; even lions and Cape buffalo
resting within yards of one another! Going to Ngorongoro Crater has been a
lifelong dream of mine and it absolutely lived up to my expectations and then
some. I even fulfilled another of my goals from within the crater; witnessing
all of the Big Five! We have now officially seen Lion, Leopard, Elephant,
Rhino, and Cape buffalo!
This week we are finalizing papers and taking our final
exams. YAY
In another week I will be fulfilling a goal that I have had
since as long as I can remember: going to Serengeti National Park! We will be
camping out for a week for our second expedition! It is crazy to think that my most
treasured life goal will be fulfilled at the age of 20, and by the end of
expedition I will be 21!
After expedition we will be writing our proposals for our
Directed Research (DR) and spending weeks out in the field collecting and
analyzing our data and presenting our results to the local community. We have
yet to receive our DR topics but we’ll keep you updated! I will be uploading
pictures from Hadzabe and Ngorongoro asap!
